Middle School Blues

I read this book when I started sixth grade. It discussed how one girl coped with going to a new school and growing up. I enjoyed this book a lot at the time because I could relate to the girl and all the new changes in her life.

The Giver by Ray Bradbury

I read this book as part of a Discovery program in sixth grade. It was about a boy who born into a utopian society, where he was given the profession of The Receiver, which was a highly respected job. This book was very creative and I liked reading it a lot. Read More About It

White Fang by Jack London

I read this book in English in sixth grade. It was about a half dog, half wolf, who wants to be near a boy on their travels through the Yukon territory. I enjoyed reading about a character other than a human.

Witches by Rohald Dahl

This book is about a young boy who stays at a hotel while a witch convention is meeting there. All the witches are in disguise, so the boy quickly learns to recongnise them in order to stay out of trouble. I found this book very entertaining.

April Morning

I read this book in seventh grade English. It was about a boy on the verge of manhood during the Revolutionary War. He wanted to go to war, but his family wanted him to stay home. It was interesting to see the war from a younger perspective.

Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton

I read this book for the eighth grade Discovery program. It is about a minister's travels through South Africa. Although it was difficult to read and required concentration, I found the book very interesting.

It happened to Nancy by an Anonymous Teenager

This is a true story taken from the pages of a young teen's diary. It is about a victim of date rape who aquires H.I.V. and eventually dies from A.I.D.S. It forced me to realize that people my age can be put in these situations.

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

I read this novel in eighth grade English. It was about a girls childhood in a discriminating time. It discusses prejudices that exist in our country.

Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls

I read this book during the summer before ninth grade. It was about a boys who tries to catch runaway circus monkeys to earn the reward. The monkeys, however, don't make this an easy task. I enjoyed reading this book a lot.

A Separate Peace by John Knowles

This novel was part of the ninth grade English curriculum. It was about a boy who struggles to find himself through his high school years. He faces many trying obsticles. I enjoyed reading this book tremendously. Read More About It

Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison

I read this book outside of school for fun. It was about a young girl who struggles to grow up in a torn family. She faces abuse, harrassment and many other tests.

Up the Down Staircase by Bel Kaufman

This book was recommended to me by my mother and was about a young teacher who has trouble fitting in at a new school. Some of the topics she has to deal with are ridiculous, and the book makes fun of petty problems teachers face.

Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther

I read this book for summer reading before tenth grade. It is a true story about the author's son who lived with a brain tumor for numorous years. It was very well written and extremely touching.

Bully by Jim Schutze

This book was a true story about revenge on a high school bully that went too far. It was shocking to me that people my age were capable of this type of revenge, but I enjoyed the book.

Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

I read this book in tenth grade English. It was about a teenage boy who struggled with finding himself. I found this book very entertaining and easy to read. Read More About It

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

I read this book in tenth grade English as well. I found it extremely enjoyable and fun to read. It was the first fantasy novel I'd read in a long time. I plan on reading the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy when I find time.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

This was another tenth grade Enlish book. I did not enjoy reading it as much as some of the other books, but it was interesting to read something that was from a different point of view.

My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok

I enjoyed reading this novel because it was mostly from a child's point of view that was easy to relate to. Also, reading about another religion was very interesting to me.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

This was a very quick and easy book to read. It was nice to sit down and breeze through a book that my teacher thought was good to read and that kept my interest for the short time it took me to read.

The Crucible by Aurthur Miller

This play was a little difficult to understand, but once it was discussed I found it to be enjoyable. It was hard to invision that these events actually took place.

Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare

Honestly, this play vaguely caught my interest, but it was still neat to read the language that Shakespeare spoke.
