A Little Bit About Me

Hi! My name is Jamie Beckman. I am fifteen years old and have lived in Newtown since I was three. I am in tenth grade at Newtown High School. I live with my parents as well as my younger sister, Erin. I am very active in my church, and I visited to York, PA this summer to work with Habitat for Humanity. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, listening to music and spending time with my friends.

My English Career

Last year as a freshman, I got away without doing much work in English. I learned a lot, but I didn't do too much. I completed the minimal amount of work neccessary to recieve a good grade. I finished all my work, but in my opinion, it wasn't of high quality.

I'm looking forward to tenth grade English. This year I expect to be challenged. I would like to improve my writing skills through writing papers and responses to readings. Also, I would like to try to work on my reading skills, while still enjoying each book. Previous teachers have beat the book to death and that makes me want to just put it down. I need to improve my listening skills because I have a tendancy of daydreaming during classes when I get bored. This sometimes hurts me when something that the teacher touched appears on a test. It would also be a good idea for me to work at my speaking in front of people. Usually I get shy when I have to stand up in front of people to make a presentation. I would like to overcome this fear because I think speaking skills will help me in the future. Improving upon my viewing skills will be useful when watching any sort of movie or play. My it will help me better understand what I watching.

I hope that I will learn things that will be useful in my everyday life. For example, when I was being confirmed in eighth grade, I was required to write a Statement of Faith. I used my knowledge of poetry to write my statement as a poem. I have since recieved many compliments on it, and a copy of my poem remains on the wall in the church office. I know if I apply myself, I will have a very successful year.
