After reading the passage that described Julius Ceasar's encounters with the pirates, one can determine many characteristics of his personality. First of all, I it shows that he had an extremely high self-esteem. If he hadn't had high self-esteem, he wouldn't have treated the pirates as though he were their leader. The way he dealt with them leads me to believe that he felt superior to them even though he was their prisoner.
In this situation, he must have been very confident that he was going to receive the ransom and be released. In many novels and movies, even after the ransom was received by the captors, they kill the prisoner anyway. He must have felt certain that he was going to be released or else he wouldn't have threatened the pirates or treated them as though he were their equal.
After reading this passage I come to think that Julius Ceasar was a very arrogant man. Anyone else in his position would not have laughed at their captors or bossed them around. He also seemed to take the fact that they took him as their prisoner very personally. After he was released, he returned to the site of his imprisonment, captured the pirates, and killed them. Just reading this little story informed me a lot about his character.
